Hanna Is Not a Boy's Name

Tessa:
Hanna Is Not A Boy’s Name is what I would classify as sugarcoated horror. It takes horror subjects and situations and puts them in an odd and a somewhat stupid light. Mostly this is because I fail completely at taking myself seriously. As for what it’s about, the best I can sum it up is it’s about Hanna, a guy who desperately wants to be a paranormal investigator but kind of sucks at it and has a handful of his own problems told by a guy who died ten years ago and seems very lukewarm about it all. That was totally a run on sentence. Mostly, this is about Hanna and his failings and (sometime) successes despite the zombie guy being the one telling the story. It is kind of a story about a person finding themselves because we all have to at one point. (from http://hanna.aftertorque.com/)

This comic is on going. It is flippen sweet! I haven't been reading it for very long, but I constantly check for updates. This comic is addicting, it has twists, interesting characters, and an AMAZING premise and plot. Added bonus? THE ARTS GREAT TOO! I can't really review it because its not over yet. In the mean time LEARNITLIVEITLOVEIT!

Some Info.
On the Right!

Your narrator and dead for [at least] ten years, { … } has grown bored of contemplating life and his own lack thereof. As he is unable to remember much of anything, he no longer dwells on it, finding that he would rather spend his time creating new memories instead of straining to call upon things that are clearly gone. So he somehow found himself at the doorstep of Hanna Falk Cross, a wanna-be paranormal investigator who ends up messing up more than not. Despite Hanna’s seemingly constant failures however, he is quite content with being Hanna’s partner and sincerely tries to aid in all of the smaller man’s endeavors.

Not much is known about him, even so much as what he is. Though he is frequently referred to as ‘zombie’ for those who aren’t creative enough [or weird enough] to come up with a new name for him each time, he lacks the desire to feast upon any brains, and while his visible emotions may seem to range from indifferent to mildly concerned, it seems fairly obvious that { … } has a good range of feelings. He falls apart, stitches back together, is dry of blood, and has a small aversion to anything very wet. He’s also told that the white shocks of hair on his head resemble angel wings, but he assures you he is anything but. So in short, he simply just is with no real explanation.

The Middle!

Hanna is best described as an overly enthusiastic, obnoxious child in the body of a twenty four year old man. Yes, he’s twenty four, yes he would love it if you bothered to remember, yes he can drink, and yes ladies, he’s single. Hanna finds glee in almost every aspect of his life, even the things that suck. He seems to believe that without your hardknock experiences you are ill suited to better appreciate the good things that come into your life. While that may seem wise beyond his years, don’t give up too much hope because he regularly exudes a far more pressing childlike innocence and naivety. It’s that same naivety that has him INSISTING upon being a paranormal investigator when it seems rather obvious to everyone that he’s not all that great at it.

He at least is semi-prepared. Hanna’s weapon of choice is a hammer with some sort of rune on it and a magic marker in which to write more runes. This is his primary way of casting and so far it seems to do him well enough in that he’s not DEAD yet. That amounts for something! There are a lot of oddities about Hanna [besides his behavior] that are yet to be explained and he always would rather change the subject awkwardly than answer any questions even if, like a big hypocrite, he will ask you a million questions about yourself and expect you to answer with the greatest sincerity.

On the Left!

Possibly categorized as the worst vampire in the world, Conrad can’t seem to get over that tiny mental hurdle of seeing people as food. It’s not so much that he wants to be the ‘nice vampire guy’ that simply won’t eat humans, its just that he has a cocktail of anxieties and neurosis so that when it comes to placing his mouth on a complete stranger, biting and sucking that all away, he really can’t bring himself to do it. This might make him seem like a complete wuss but….oh wait, no Conrad really is a complete wuss, sorry about that.

Before undeath, Conrad was a wimpy little artfag with some serious anger management issues, and being a vampire has changed very little of that. His temperament leads him to being generally irritable or exasperated as of right now, but underneath it all Conrad has a really hard time being anything but a nice guy. Previously walked all over until his spine was permanently bent backwards, Conrad seems to think that if he comes off as assholish and standoffish people will forever be fooled. Unfortunately for him, it turns out that everybody knows he is all bark and no bite. Well, he didn’t use to. ((Conrad is my favorite!))

Other Characters/Supporting Cast!

Doc Worth calls himself a doctor, but not many other people do. I mean Hanna does, but Hanna has terrible judgment. Doc Worth did the whole fancy going to medical school thing for a while, until he realized that dressing nicely and remembering a bunch of ‘useless crap’ wasn’t really his style. So he dropped out, fell out of touch with his family and started a practice in a dark alley somewhere while simultaneously deciding that all of his coats needed to have a line of fur on it for absolutely no reason except maybe that it made him look sorta dingier and skeezier.

Worth has horrible posture, finding no real reason why he should do anything to please anyone he doesn’t care about. He simply embodies apathy when it comes to what people think of him, and even seems to make a fun game out of trying to get a rise out of some. Worth is obnoxious, crude, abrasive and borderline disgusting, and underneath his grungy exterior and antagonistic behavior he really still is actually just a dick.

But he helps Hanna so there’s that.

Toni was one of those people who couldn’t help but notice that there was something slightly ‘off’ about Hanna and the people that he seemed to keep as company. It probably had something to do with the fact that she, herself, was odd company, revealing very canine tendencies should she get sort of miffed about something. An insensitive guy might suggest that is just cos she’s a crazy girl, but she would assure you that there is something much bigger going on than just that. She’s pretty sure that being a crazy girl doesn’t actually give you the urge to howl at the moon.

A struggling artist, Toni is desperate to prove herself that she has the discipline and passion to do almost anything she sets her mind to, which can create quite a fast mindset that she is too stubborn to budge from. That said, Toni has a tendency to never feel very ‘meh’ about anything. While she may manage to downplay it in a conversation, her friends are quick to find that she either hates or loves things with little to no in between, and when she loves them she always holds onto them tight.

The first thing you may notice about Veser is that he has ungodly huge eyes. Second thing may be his horrible rows of gnashing shark teeth, and thirdly may be that he’s an annoying teenage twat. These are all accurate and wonderful observations. Veser is nineteen, but he acts way younger than that, though how much of it is a mask is somewhat debatable. Its hard to tell whether or not he decides to say inappropriate things because he thinks it is funny or because he sincerely lacks the social tact. Most speculate it is both.

Veser has boundless energy and a mischievous streak a mile wide, being one of the only people that can keep up with Hanna’s regular excitement. But whereas Hanna finds joy in most of life despite circumstances, Veser is entirely cynical, finding that he has little trust in people and faith in mankind as a whole. He tends to react violently to things as a poor line of self defense, punching and kicking and picking fights when he is in a bad mood. Though in turn, when in a good mood Veser is extremely friendly, usually being quite close so he can hug, drape over you, or friendly-punch you in the arm if the moment calls for it. Veser is very much a slave to all of his emotions.

This is a very new character: Primarily known as the guy who looks great in suspenders and ticks an awful lot, Ples is the guy who [unsurprisingly] looks great in suspenders and ticks an awful lot.
